Caring Bear

Caring Bear is Ottumwa Regional Health Center's official mascot. Caring Bear "Your Friend for Life" is a big pink bear that was created in 1983 for the main purpose of demonstrating that Ottumwa Regional Health Center is a caring institution.

Over the years, Caring Bear has also helped educate children in Southeast Iowa in their classrooms and during their visits to the health center.

Classroom Visits

Caring Bear visits local pre-schools and elementary schools, grades K-2 and teaches kids the importance of washing their hands to stay healthy and prevent the spread of infection. During these visits, Caring Bear shows a five-minute video on correct handwashing technique, featuring himself and some of his pre-school friends, and then holds a question and answer session with the kids. Before he leaves, the kids get the chance to give Caring Bear a hug and Caring Bear gives them a sticker and personal-size bar of soap to take home with them. A short Caring Bear video can be viewed below. If you need to, go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ to download the free QuickTime player.

Tours

Caring Bear also accompanies kids in Pre-school-2nd grade during classroom hospital tours by request of their teachers. Click here for Group Tour Guidelines

Special Events

Caring Bear also makes many public appearances at special events throughout the year as a representative of Ottumwa Regional Health Center. Caring Bear participates in parades, health fairs, carnivals and local festivals.

Patient Visits

Caring Bear also makes random visits to patient rooms at Ottumwa Regional Health Center, bringing giggles and smiles to young and old patients, visitors and staff.
