Hospital tours Educate local students
OTTUMWA
- At Ottumwa Regional it is not unusual to see large
groups of high school students in the halls or preschool
students looking inside of one our ambulances. Every
year, many students from all grades tour our facility.
We take the students to different areas of the
hospital depending on their age and what we think is
appropriate, says Julie Carter, volunteer services.
Ottumwa High School students in Melva Coxs parenting
class watch a 20-minute video of the consequences of
teenage pregnancy and then tour the labor/delivery unit
and are given a vivid illustration of what happens during
childbirth.
I enjoyed the field trip because it taught me
a lot of things that I didnt realize about having
a baby. Seeing the actual procedure rooms and hearing
about all the things that could go wrong really made
me think about my future and about having kids,
says Sarah Opieku, OHS student.
Preschool
students get to see the fun stuff at Ottumwa Regional.
A typical tour for the younger kids consists of a trip
to radiology, meeting paramedics and a visit to the
laundry room.
The younger kids really enjoy the laundry room
because it is so noisy and it has really big machines
that move fast, says Julie.
Tours at Ottumwa Regional are very educational and
help kids feel comfortable about the hospital. Tours
can be scheduled through Julie by calling 684-2350.
