ORHC To Become Tobacco-Free Campus
3-2-2006
Ottumwa Regional Health Center will implement a tobacco-free campus policy effective November 16, 2006. Beginning on that day, no tobacco use will be permitted in the building or on the grounds by employees, patients, or visitors.
The policy will also apply to all health care clinics and properties owned by ORHC. These include: - Alta Vista Site - Child Health Specialties at Marion Hall - SIEDA Head Start at Marion Hall -Eddyville Clinic -Eldon Clinic -Richland Clinic
"Ottumwa Regional advocates healthy lifestyles for our patients and associates," stated Lynn Olson, CEO and President at Ottumwa Regional. "Research has shown time and time again the negative effects of second-hand smoke and we want to provide the healthiest environment possible to staff, patients and visitors."
In addition, the Iowa Department of Public Health will no longer provide grant money to organizations that are not tobacco free. ORHC has received over $150,000 in recent years, which has supported programs such as Cardiovascular Risk Reduction, Nursing Mentor Project and Iowa Breast and Cervical Cancer early Detection Program.
Beginning on November 16, which coincides with the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout, tobacco use will no longer be permitted by employees, patients, or visitors in or on any of the facilities or grounds owned by the hospital.
"The health center recognizes that this change will pose a challenge for ORHC and for those who use tobacco," stated Lynn Olson, CEO at Ottumwa Regional. "Yet I believe the challenge is worth the benefits to everyone and that the move further demonstrates ORHC's dedication to health care for life."
