SATF Teen Activity Provide Movie Event For Area Youth
12-21-2005
The Ottumwa Substance Abuse Task Force Teen
Activity Committee, through a grant received from United
Way of Wapello County & Ottumwa 8 Theatre will be
co-sponsoring a special movie event on December 27,
2005. Area youth will be admitted to the 9 PM showing
of any movie (except R rated movies) at the theatre
for matinee price.
This event is being held to provide an inexpensive substance
free event for the youth in our area during winter break
from school. Statistics indicate a high rise in alcohol
and other substance use among youth during the holiday
season. The task force hopes that this activity will
provide one remedy for the complaint of nothing
to do that adults occasionally hear from youth.
The Ottumwa Substance Abuse Task Force encourages parents
to give their teens the priceless gift of time this
Christmas by remaining involved in their lives and scheduling
meaningful family activities throughout the holiday
season. Schedule one-on-one time with your child. Some
ideas are teaching your son or daughter how to make
a special family recipe, going for a walk together,
going bowling, catching a movie together, scheduling
a family game night, scrapbooking or resurrecting your
high school yearbook to share with them.
I really encourage parents to eat meals with
their teens as often as possible to get a handle on
the day-to-day stuff, said Kathy Hasley,
coordinator of the Substance Abuse Task Force. It
is so important to listen carefully to your teens for
all that is said and possibly unsaid.
